How to Play Guitar - For Beginners

When you first start the guitar, the first step would be to learn the parts of the instrument. This will make it easy for you when people are explaining things during guitar lessons. It's also important that you can tune your guitar, you can pick up a cheap tuner from almost any good music store or online. To tune a guitar you need to know which strings are which and what note they need to sound like, the strings from the top are: E - A - D - G - B - e. Tuning by ear can take some time to learn so I would strongly suggest getting a tuner.

Top three tips when tuning a guitar:

1. When tuning the guitar try and use your ears more than any electronic device.

2. Tune in the dark. This helps train your ears for better pitch control.

3. Always play along to a song you know well to make sure your guitar sounds in tune.

When you get to the point where you actually want to start playing the guitar then it's strongly recommended that you learn the basic major and minor chords and the minor pentatonic scale. This will serve as excellent foundations for your guitar playing and when you have learned them properly then you could be in a position to start making up your own very basic songs and riffs. Some great bands use just simple chords such as Oasis. After you have mastered the simple chords the next step would be to work on power chords. Power chords are used in alot of rock music and are the basis of barre chords. Learning the guitar in these steps could really help your playing and make the whole process alot faster and easier.

The Beginner's Guide to Learning to Play the Guitar

By Liam Gibson

You have a guitar. You have a quiet place to practice. You have the enthusiasm, drive, and ambition to learn how to play. Where do you go from here?

Beginner Guitar Lessons

Many beginners that get discouraged when they start out. This is because they simply do not know how to learn to play guitar. The trick is to find the best guitar lessons to keep you focused. At times, it can be difficult to start, but it will get easier as you continue on.

It is incredibly difficult to learn to play a guitar, or any instrument, without help. You need a clear and proven lesson plan set forth by an experienced instructor. Playing around on the strings is fine, if that is what you want, but a serious guitarist needs a serious plan.

Beginner guitar playing lessons are the best way to stay on track and progress at a steady rate. The only problem is that there are so many different lessons and methods to choose from. This makes it difficult to find the right one for you, and you need to know what to look for.

Many people will choose private guitar lessons, but this is not recommended for beginners. The reason for this is that the basics can be learned effectively without the exorbitant cost of a private instructor. Also, most instructors are biased toward a certain style of playing, and this may not be conducive to the style that you wish to play. Finally, the benefit of one-on-one instruction can easily be lost in the short, half-hour sessions that you will have.

The best way to learn guitar, for a beginner, is through through a home study course. They are much cheaper than private instructors, and you can learn at your own pace. They can be adapted to your own style, and they are usually written by an accomplished instructor. You receive the same quality of instruction, as often as you want, and at a fraction of the cost.

One of the best home study courses is Learn and Master Guitar. You pay only a one-time fee to access the material, and you are provided with written material, as well as a corresponding DVD and CD. It is much more than just a beginner lesson. It will, of course, get you started, but there are many advanced techniques, as well.

Learn and Master Guitar is not a free pass. They offer 24 free beginner courses, but to really progress, they offer a six month course for only $119. Compare that to over $150 per month for private lessons, and it's still the better deal.

If you are looking to invest a little less in your guitar lessons, you can try Jamorama.com, as well.

While these two services are an excellent starting point, they are not your only option. If you choose to look elsewhere, there are some important things to consider. First, make sure that the course is written by a reputable author. You will need lessons that are well structured, starting out easy and gradually progressing as you do. There should be a wide variety of lessons and skill levels which allow you to play popular songs that you are familiar with. The lessons must be easy to follow, and of course, make sense. The lessons should include both written music and guitar tabs. Finally, and possibly most importantly, the lessons must teach you the exercises, chords, scales, and advanced techniques that will help you succeed.

Make sure you do plenty of research before deciding. The best choice for learning the guitar has to be worth the money you spend.

Learn How to Play Guitar Quickly With Online Guitar Lessons

If you want to learn how to play guitar quickly, it’s vital that you follow a high quality course of lessons. Many people try to learn guitar by picking up chords, scales and other techniques from a variety of sources, but this is really going about things the hard way, and if you take this approach, you’re likely to miss out on many fundamental skills, as well as developing bad habits that you’ll have to spend more time unlearning later on. So if you want to learn to play the guitar, start off on the right footing by committing yourself to a course of structured lessons.

When it comes to selecting your guitar lessons, you basically have the choice of private lessons with a teacher, a tutor book/DVD or a course of online guitar lessons. All of these methods have their pros and cons, but I believe that downloadable guitar lessons are the best option for those who want to learn to play guitar fast, without skimping on their skills. There are various reasons why this is the case:

Cost

Online lessons are fantastic value - you can get a year’s worth of high quality downloadable lessons for $50 or less. In comparison, this would buy you less than two lessons with many private teachers.

Format

The best online courses also typically come in a multi-media format (with text, audio and video material, as well as software in some cases) - this variety makes learning more fun and effective, increasing your motivation to practice, and thus reducing the amount of time you’ll need to master the guitar.

Structure

A high quality course of online lessons is just that - a well-structured course that shows you what you need to know, in an order that makes sense, so you can build on your existing skills. By following this kind of regulated course, you’ll save time that might otherwise be spent hopping from place to place, learning a bit here and there, but never really learning how to put your skills together.

Timing

You can progress at your own pace. With no teacher breathing down your neck or forcing you to go at their speed, you can take as much time as you like to master each step. And ironically enough, by learning slowly, and giving yourself all the time you need to really hone your skills, your overall progress will be faster, and you won’t have to waste more time in the future relearning the basics or overcoming bad habits.

I believe that Jamorama is one of the best online guitar lesson courses available for those who want to learn how to play guitar quickly, and it’s certainly the best value. The material is professionally put together, and very easy to follow, plus it’s fun, so you’ll want to keep practising - making your progress even faster. You can find out more about the course by visiting http://learntheguitaronline.info, or check out my in-depth review of Jamorama for more about my own experience with it.

Learn to Play Guitar for Beginners

By Brian

So I have been posting free guitar lessons here on this blog, and having quite a bit of fun with it, and it occurred to me that, with the popular new games like Guitar Hero and that English band, whatever their name was, there must be quite a lot of people thinking about how they might like to learn to play guitar.

And so I will be putting some new posts about how to learn to play guitar for beginners. I’m sure that, if this is you, some of the questions you have might be;

1. Is it difficult to learn to play guitar?

2. Should I play electric or acoustic guitar?

3. Do I need to learn to read notes?

4. How long will it take, before I can sound like a Guitar Hero?

Stop and consider just where you want to go with the guitar. What are your musical goals, in other words?

The basic difference between electric and acoustic guitar is in the style of playing. Long before the electric guitar was the acoustic guitar, which was used in Spanish Classics and folk music. If you dig the classics and want to be able to play classics, then note reading is a must. Additionally, this is a style that uses a finger pick style where each string of the guitar is picked individually with the right hand fingers.

This is not to say you won’t find classical guitar technique in a rock band, being used on electric guitar! Lots of Led Zepplin tunes need a classical style of guitar execution. Studying the classics is how many pop players get the edge they have.

On the other hand, if you are anxious to start playing your favorite tunes and don’t think you’ll have the patience to learn the notes on all six strings of the guitar, (I’m not trying to discourage you, but this does take a bit of patience), on the other hand there is Tabs;

Tabs for Guitar

Tabs for Guitar

Tabs is a really easy alternative notation system for guitar. The very top line, with the two fours is often where your rhythm goes, if they add it to the Tabs. The next six horizontal lines are your guitar strings. The top of the six lines is string number one, which will be the lowest string physically on your guitar when it is held in playing position.

Now then, the numbers are the frets on your fingerboard. You can see, in this example, that you would begin on string number six and play the open string (no fingers), then proceed to fret one, three and then go on to string number five.

This is called a scale, which can be compared to going up and down a flight of stairs without skipping any steps; every note is there in order. Memorize the pattern to this one and play it, using a different finger for each fret and picking back and forth. When you get to the top, come back down by simply reversing everything.

It’s easy to find tabs for your favorite songs on the internet. The only problem is that they often let anyone who wants to upload a song tab and it might not be accurate.

My recommendation is to go to your local music store and get a book with the songs you want in tabs. These will be a lot more accurate and easier to read. They will also usually put the traditional notation along with it and, this way you can begin to explore note reading and get the best of both worlds. You will also need the rhythm, which you can get from the traditional notation.

You cannot make music without rhythm and the beat, especially if you want to play in a group. I will be putting up some more posts about how to read rhythm and probably note reading, so check back with this site for updates and more free guitar lessons!
