Learn to Play Guitar Fast - With the Right Materials
By John Brenndarfer
If you want to learn to play guitar fast, then you can't afford to be haphazard about it. Sure you could noodle around on it for years, but how much better would you actually get? Getting better at the guitar quickly takes effort, dedication, and information. While no one but you can do anything about the first two, you'll be glad to know that there are plenty of people willing to help you with the third.
In Your Heroes' Footsteps
Often, when people start playing the guitar, it's because they've seen someone who has inspired them through their own playing. Whether it's the hordes of guitarists inspired by Jimi Hendrix, the guitar attacks of bands like Children of Bodom, or the fingerstyle of players like Adrian Legg, great guitar players can make you want to practice hard.
They can also tell you what to practise, thanks to many of them having instructional books and DVDs. Alexi Laiho has his Metal Guitar series from Rock House, for example, while Adrian Legg appears in the Hot Licks DVD Fingerpicking and Open Tunings. Some, such as Asia, GPS and Dizzee Rascal guitarist Guthrie Govan, have written impressive instructional books. His Creative Guitar series is particularly good, focusing on the guitarist's role as a musician while still giving you some challenging exercises to practise.
General Methods- Books
Of course, if you want to learn to play guitar fast, then a more general guide might also be very useful. Hal Leonard's Guitar Method series is a classic, and covers everything the budding guitarist might need. Alfred's Beginning Guitar series achieves many of the same things, while their beginning, intermediate and advanced guides to Rock, Blues, Acoustic and Jazz guitar give you a clear progression in a single style to accelerate your learning. Those really trying to get into their guitar playing quickly might want to consider Hal Leonard's Play Guitar Today book.
DVDs
There are dozens of good DVDs that can help speed up your learning. The House of Blues Guitar Course, for example, will give you a good grounding in most aspects of electric guitar playing, while the MJS Guitar DVD series breaks guitar up into levels and subjects that allow you to find exactly the right information for your level of playing. One effective option is the fretboard logic system, by Bill Edwards Publishing, that breaks guitar playing down into its constituent components, teaching you the musical knowledge of scales, chords and arpeggios you need to improve.
Styles
There are almost as many styles of guitar playing as there are musical styles, and plenty of ways to learn them. From Rusty Cooley's Fretboard Autopsy series on rock and metal, to Frank Gambale's jazzy Acoustic Improvisation, focusing on one style can really help. Combine it with some of the other suggestions above and you'll not just learn to play guitar fast, you'll learn to play everything you want.

Learn to Play Guitar With Guitar Lessons That Produce Results Fast
By Jon Calderbank
The trouble with learning to play the guitar is when you have been strumming a few beginner guitar chords for a long time and you always play the same things whenever you pick it up. You never make any real progress but when you add up how much time you've spent on the guitar, you should really be joining a local rock band playing power chords until your guitar amplifier explodes!
Learning Guitar chords: When you start to play your first guitar chords, you don't know how much use you will get out of them. After picking up more advanced techniques and chords, you will realise how influential the initial chords are. If they appear lifeless to begin with, you will notice an advantage over your peers that choose to skip early lessons. Those those stick with the early lessons develop their guitar skills more thoroughly.
Traditional Guitar Lesson: If it feels strange to learn guitar online because you always felt it would be most effective with a guitar tutor sat in front of you, then you may have a point. But, you can be so specific with your music genre once you have laid the foundations online. You can tap into the experience of expert guitar players in the genre you like the most. This is where online guitar lessons come into their own.
Acoustic and electric guitar skills: Part of the appeal of guitar courses isn't always to learn to most cool tricks, it's just to get the foundations absolutely right. This helps you go on and develop all the skills later. Making the time to do something that might not be on the top of your to do list will help you get much better in the future, but it doesn't suit everyone. Some want to go straight to a particular area or song. It's these people that usually play that one song for years and that's it.

Holding the Guitar
By Jerry Carrison
When you are sitting down to play the guitar on a chair make sure that the surface of the chair is firm as a soft chair will unbalance you and can affect your guitar performance.
While you are in position sitting down on the chair, place the guitar body on your right leg. On the body of the guitar you will find a groove that will comfortably fit onto your right leg.
Then spread your feet apart into a position that feels comfortable and that allows you to remain balanced and centered. Foot positioning can vary when using different height chairs and when you are taller or shorter.
Now that you are in this comfortable sitting position, place your right arm on top of the body of the guitar. Your right arm should be responsible for holding the instrument and not your left hand.
If you are holding the guitar at the guitar neck with your left hand your performance will be hindered. If you are holding the instrument correctly, the guitar will not lean towards the floor when you stop holding the neck of the guitar.
The classical guitar technique is different. When playing the guitar in the classical style you place the body of the instrument on your left leg. This will result in the instrument being raised up at an angle with the neck of the guitar being closer to the ceiling.
To help keep the guitar at the perfect angle, classical guitar players use a foot stool under their left foot. Others use a technique that is called the support arm. Many modern day classical guitar players use the support arm instead of the a foot stool.
When you are holding the guitar while standing, you will need to use a guitar strap. To fit this correctly all you need to do is make sure it feels comfortable. However, if you are just starting out learning the guitar, use should aim to have the guitar higher up so you can finger better on the fretboard. When the guitar is closer towards your head, fretting becomes easier.
Often times, stage performers will let the guitar hang down lower to give the performance a more visually dramatic effect. When the guitar is hanging down lower, many people find it harder to correctly position their fingers on the fretboard.
There is no exact science to how you should how the guitar should be held but there are many concepts and principles that are very useful to follow and that will benefit you greatly.
It is important that you adopt a position where you remain balanced and comfortable throughout the performance. Any little attempts to get more balanced and comfortable while playing the guitar will hinder the flow.

How to Play the Guitar - The Best Way to Learn Guitar Quickly
By Jon Calderbank
You can get sucked into learning to play the guitar in all the wrong ways. A few basic guitar chords on one site, pentatonic scales half-learned somewhere else and playing around with guitar tablature spending more time looking for something you're able to play, than actually playing your guitar and improving your skills. The best way to learn guitar quickly is to ensure that your lessons are taking you where you want and give you enough tuition to last you a long time.
Guitar Chords For Beginners: Even if you already know most of the basic guitar chords, going back to basics is bound to highlight something new that would have been useful to know first time around. This will apply to so many areas of playing the guitar if you've never really learned in any particular order.
Standard Guitar Tuition: Learning the basics on guitar may make you think it's going to be boring. The tuition that's available these days is interactive and keeps you more involved that the music theory books of decades ago ever could. If you've not already had a look at online lessons, you should try this and see how it increases your learning rate.
Accomplished Guitar Player: The point when you're able to pick up a guitar and jam along to bands or get everyone signing is a magical stage. It can come a lot earlier than you think and you will be a lot better equipped when you get there as long as you don't rush through any critical stages.

Learn Guitar Chords, Blues Music and How to Play Acoustic Guitar
by Randy Hough
Few things are as enjoyable as picking up an acoustic guitar and playing some blues guitar or when you learn new guitar chords that connect with your soul. There is something about the creative process that is restoring and regenerating.
It is remarkable just how many guitar chords there are, and I am only able to play a fraction of them. The fact that there are six strings and some 20 frets to choose from makes for an almost infinite variety of sound and tone.
Not only that, but playing blues guitar has it's own subtle notes that are apart from the conventional scale. Theses blue notes are usually notes that come from bending the strings to adjust the pitch until it gets to the right sound, which is totally up to the player and listener.
To play acoustic guitar you don't need to know all of those chords that are art of the infinite variety, you only need to start with a few. If you can play 3 chords, you can play probably a thousand different songs.
Of course, after a while, you will grow tired of this simple sound, and want to expand you abilities to include some of those so-called fancy chords up the neck. In reality, these are not that complicated, but some people seem to have a kind of mental block about anything beyond the first 3 frets.
It is quite a feeling to discover that the entire fretboard makes perfect sense and is, in fact, mathematical and logical. Once you learn some simple patterns it all begins to make sense. Then you can become confident and experiment with your playing.
The old blues players from the South had very limited means, in fact some had homemade guitars. These instruments were made of cigar boxes and wire for strings. When you see one it becomes apparent why people like Chuck Berry developed the style they are known by.
Many of these old time players had no musical training at all, and they just tuned the guitar in whatever way sounded good. This is why many old blues songs are in open tunings, sometimes very odd tunings. To them it made no difference, it just sounded good, so they went with it.
On the other hand, if you have a good acoustic or electric guitar, it really makes a difference to use good accessories. Your choice of guitar string, for example, makes a big difference. If you use heavy strings it will be hard to play and your fingers will hurt after a short time. Heavy strings have their place, for sure, but for most people it is better to use light gage guitar strings. Even medium strings can be hard to press down and will hurt your fingers.
Electric guitar strings are different though because they do not require much tension to work and sound great. It it much easier to play an electric, but it does not have the sound of an acoustic. An acoustic electric is a sort of hybrid of the two and works quite well, especially when performing.

How to Play the Acoustic Guitar
by Mick Waterfall
With easy guitar lessons it is a good chance that most of us can learn to play the instrument reasonably well. But a lot of times learners quit too early. Frequently, beginners giving up will blame it on their lack of time to rehearse and that working the strings causes pain on their fingers. The trouble is that they just don't practice a sufficient amount of time. This article will not give you additional time to practice, but it will guide you into effectively turn into an all right guitar player.
Here are some propositions on your learning approach to play the guitar. Get a tool to train your hand. A GripMaster with some callus builder caps are available on Amazon.com. Another way to increase callous growth is to rub on surgical spirit to the fingertips.
The next step is to have your own guitar. You can make a good deal on a guitar on EBay or other auction sites. However, if you are already fairly sincere about learning to play guitar it is probably a good idea to buy a good quality guitar. An appropriate guitar will cost you from $100 to $250. A very fine guitar will cost you upward of $300.
Start with learning the names and functions of the guitar parts, and the way sound is produced. Find an excellent home study course. The internet has numerous sites offering teaching. But there are a small number that is superior to the rest and is offering the maximum value. Below you will find links to some pages reviewing the best guitar study courses available on how to play the acoustic guitar.
Learn basic "open chords." These are chords like open C, G, A, and D. Once you learn how to master a small selection of basic chords you will be able to kick out a reasonable rendition of countless numbers of tunes. Become skilled at as many different ways to play a chord as you can. The more flexibility you have in shifting from one chord to another.
Practice. Practice. Practice. Practice makes perfect isn't just some old saying. It's possible to practice periods focusing on diverse parts - tone, smoothness, speed, accuracy. By engaging in separate practice sides of the music independently, you can improve your skills. Practice 5 out 7 days as a minimum for at least half an hour. If you want to learn fast, you must forcefully feed your mind with guitar training.
Practice the chords and hand positions without a sound while watching TV or during conversation with a friend. Over time, look at your fingers less often, however, you still check that you have found the correct position. Press down on the strings just as hard as you would if actually playing, to cultivate calluses on your fingertips. This will hurt in the beginning, and will make your fingers hurt. Once you develop calluses though, the pain you once felt will eventually fade away.
Allow yourself to become frustrated. It's inevitable. It's normal. That chord you've been struggling to voice perfectly for the past week, will in due course, sound clear and distinct.
The greatest way to learn how to play the acoustic guitar is to play tunes, because with a recorded tune you have a frame of reference to compare your playing. And it will help you more and more if you learn how to play the hole song, not just parts of the song. Learn to finger pick. Some songs are fully made for finger picking. The fact is that once you learn it, it feels like clock-work and your fingers will more or less pick automatically.
